We were in the middle of planed network maintenance. It was not going well.
The change window was just about to end. We were fighting with some unexpected issues causing service degradation.

I needed to make a tough call, either extend the maintenance window or carry on working on evening, on Sunday, or try to fix as much stuff as we could and regroup with the rest of my team on Monday.

I called my boss, but he was abroad and couldn’t pick up. Other folks from management were also not picking up their phones. I was on my own.
I decided to instruct my engineer to roll back the changes, stabilize the network, and get some rest.

We would pick up things the next day. I was trying to cool down after a huge stress when my wife informed me that we would need to go to the hospital with my newborn son because he was having some severe allergy symptoms.
The following 24 hours were a painful lesson in how I could prioritize and execute on things in my life.

The situation described above had a happy end. It was the beginning of my conscious thinking about priorities, obligations, and boxes that either I or others created and put me in.
